Finding the Right Engineering Path: Reuben Hynam’s My Apprenticeship Journey

Reuben Hynam, 17, is currently training as a Machinist Technician at Edwards Vacuum, and his story is one of discovering a passion for engineering in an unexpected way. When Reuben first started considering his future, he admits he had no clear idea of what he wanted to do. “I didn’t come from an engineering background,” he explains, “and engineering wasn’t really something that ran in my family. The only engineer I knew was my great-grandfather, who was a tool maker after returning from World War II.”

He recalls feeling unsure about traditional academic routes. “When it was time to pick my next move after school, I knew A-levels weren’t for me. I didn’t thrive in the classroom—learning in that way just didn’t suit me. I wanted to do something hands-on, where I could get involved and really learn by doing.”

That desire for a practical, engaging pathway led him to an apprenticeship opportunity at Edwards Vacuum. Reuben took the time to research what a Machinist Technician does. “The more I looked into it, the more it caught my interest. Working with precision tools, understanding how things are made, and being part of the process from start to finish—it all really appealed to me.”

Since starting his training, Reuben has found the experience to be hugely rewarding. “It’s more than just operating machines or reading technical drawings,” he notes. “I’ve really come to value the soft skills I’m gaining, like problem-solving, teamwork, and time management. These are skills that will help in any career, not just engineering.”

Reuben believes that the apprenticeship is laying a solid foundation for a successful career. “It’s about understanding how the industry works and building the confidence to take on challenges. I feel like I’m developing both technical abilities and personal skills that will stay with me for life.”

For young people considering their own careers, Reuben has a clear message: “If you’re thinking about an engineering apprenticeship, I’d say go for it. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. You get to earn while you learn—and avoid a lot of the student debt that comes with university. Plus, you get real-world experience with expert support along the way.”

Looking back, Reuben is proud of taking this route. “I’m glad I trusted this path, even though I started with zero idea what I wanted to do. It’s given me skills, direction, and even pride when I tell people what I do. My nan still thinks I ‘fix things with spanners,’ but I know I’m on the right track.”
